Review of Royal Canin MINI Dry Food

Veterinarian Jean Cathary founded Royal Canin in southern France in 1968.

Cathary’s goal was to produce pet food that would satisfy the needs of the pet rather than the desires of the pet owner by developing recipes that were grounded in science.

With decades of experience and innovation on the field of specialising pet foods, Royal Canin has expanded its operation to America where you will find its base of operations in St. Charles, Missouri and manufacturing plants in Missouri and South Dakota however the actual pet food sold in America is produced in the United States and Canada.

Royal CaninRoyal Canin are committed to assuring the quality of the products they sell worldwide.

  • Suppliers undergo a strict selection process and then the ingredients are tested when they arrive at the plants.
  • Every plant performs quality checks to test for mycotoxins, melamine and salmonella.
  • Every plant used for manufacturing is owned by Royal Canin and complies with international standards for quality management and food safety.
  • All finished products are tested before they are shipped.

When it comes to nutrition in pet food Royal Canin are most concerned with body development, energy requirements, disease prevention and special care.

As for the kibble, Royal Canin have done their homework in terms of size, shape, texture and density. These are important considerations because dental health has informed Royal Canin.

Retrievers, for example, are known for eating food very quickly and without chewing. A donut-shaped kibble is designed to encourage chewing and works to slow down the speed of ingestion.

Royal Canin offer a range of pet foods for all dog life stages and breeds. Royal Canin MINI formula is a dry dog food for puppies and the main ingredients are:

Royal Mini Puppy Dry Dog Food• chicken meal,
• brewers rice,
• chicken fat,
• corn,
• corn gluten meal,
• wheat gluten,
• dried beet pulp
• natural flavours

Royal Canin claim that when grain is processed properly it can be a healthy part of a puppy’s diet however pet food critics may read that as an excuse for food manufacturers to use cheaper fillers, which is exactly what the MINI formula does.

Chicken meal is the primary meat protein source. While it is not the traditional chicken source due to the rendering process it does pack more protein and less moisture.

Sadly, the runner up ingredient is brewers rice which is also cheap filler and loses it potency for fibre due to the quality of the husks of the grain.

Chicken fat brings the natural fatty acids to the mix.

The Journal of Nutrition published an article in 1994 entitled ‘Stool Characteristics, Gastrointestinal Transit Time and Nutrient Digestibility in Dogs Fed Different Fiber Sources’.

… the results of this study suggest that finely ground cellulose, corn fiber or pectin can be used in commercial pet foods without adversely affecting nutrient digestibility or gastrointestinal function …

This study focused on short-term results and used food mixtures with multiple fibre sources. It can be argued that the lack of fibre diversity in Royal Canin MINI formula could be improved if higher quality grains or better alternatives are implemented.

Dried beet pulp is another by-product full of carbohydrates and fibre although there are disadvantages with using this cheap ingredient. Palatability, or taste, and the potential to upset doggy stomachs means that the Royal Canin recipe comprises filler and economical components that look healthy but are actual weak imitators of better options.

At the time of writing this review, there were 11 5-star and 3 4-start reviews on Amazon for this variant. On nutritional grounds it rates low, but what do other people think?

Of the few four- and five-star reviews online, Amazon users like Mombdh2 and HKFan are purchasing Royal Canin based on advice from breeders and vets however they do not explain why consumers should buy Royal Canin in the first place.

Review of Taste of the Wild High Prairie Puppy Formula

<a href="http://www.tasteofthewildpetfood visit here.com/” onclick=”_gaq.push([‘_trackEvent’, ‘outbound-article’, ‘http://www.tasteofthewildpetfood.com/’, ‘Taste of the Wild’]);” target=”_blank”>Taste of the Wild distribute their pet foods worldwide however their media presence is shy to advertise the fact that they are a subsidiary of Diamond Pet Foods, Inc.

So what is Diamond hiding? Turns out there have been several recalls on pet food products due to contaminations.

Instead of hoping the consumer won’t do their homework I think Taste of the Wild would be a more reputable brand if they were more transparent like other manufacturers.

Taste of the WildTo rectify this trust issue, Taste of the Wild should elaborate on their quality assurance procedures to restore confidence and possibly regain loyalty from those affected by product recalls.

Did you know that the Taste of the Wild pet food range did not originally offer a puppy pet food option?

When Taste of the Wild launched they carried lines of pet food appropriate for all doggy life stages and so due to popular demand Taste of the Wild have formulated a recipe specifically designed for puppy consumption and are nutritionally beneficial for dogs under 18 months old.

The new recipes offer improved digestibility for puppies with a total fibre content of 5% and additional probiotics and prebiotics.

Taste of the Wild claim that salmon oil is a natural source of DHA, which is present in mother’s milk and aids cognitive and visual development.

According to the article ‘Therapeutic agents for the treatment of cognitive dysfunction syndrome in senior dogs’ published in Progress in Neuro-Psychopharmacology and Biological Psychiatry (Volume 29, 2005)

… the testing of products currently licensed and in the pipeline for the treatment of cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s in humans, may provide additional therapeutic agents for the treatment of senior dogs …

While the study is overtly specific to older dogs, it also touches on cognitive impairment and the decline of learning and memory in younger pets. The study does not confirm how beneficial DHA is in terms of cognitive aid so be mindful of food companies talking up their products with buzz words.

The size of the kibble compared to the adult formula is also reduced to accommodate puppy-sized mouths.

Taste of the Wild High Prairie Puppy Formula is available online in a 30 pound bag. The main ingredients are:

Taste of the Wild Grain-Free High Prairie Puppy Formula• bison,

  • lamb meal,
  • sweet potatoes,
  • egg product,
  • pea protein,
  • peas,
  • potatoes,
  • canola oil,
  • tomato pomace,
  • roasted venison,
  • roasted bison,
  • flaxseed,
  • potato fibre,
  • natural flavour,
  • ocean fish meal
  • salmon oil

Bison is a fairly unique and exotic meat protein source, which immediately makes this product stand out against its competition. This is not a bad thing because bison contains slightly more protein than beef.

The second ingredient is lamb meal; a packed protein source with reduce moisture content due to the rendering process.

Sweet potatoes are an excellent high quality source of fibre and vitamins. Other brands would feature sweet potato in much smaller quantities after standard white spuds presumably due to overhead manufacturing costs.

Egg product is another protein source alongside pea protein extracted from the legume.

Canola oil is naturally preserved and provides omega fatty acids intended to improve and maintain skin and coat health.

Other meat sources like roasted venison and bison are a welcome addition to Taste of the Wild’s exotic puppy formula. Other brands at this stage would rely on by-products to pad out the composition so it is excellent to see quality natural ingredients in use.

Flaxseed and salmon oil ensure there are enough fatty acids for a balanced meal.

There are a lot of Amazon users who have shared their experiences with Taste of the Wild High Prairie Puppy Formula and the positive responses are overwhelming.

Dresden’s story is inspirational: ‘My puppy was so skinny and sick when I got him from the shelter … he was itchy and flaky all over. Switched him to this immediately … No more itching and barely any skin flaking. I am so thankful for this product’.

To contrast, Sarah mentions a product recall where her ‘…dog wasn’t as affected by the contamination as we were, my boyfriend and I wondered why we had been so sick lately’.

Also, according to Omar: ‘I have a Yellow Lab puppy who was 9 months old when I bought this. He eats literally everything and anything he can get his hands on, but he did not enjoy this at all’.

Review of Pedigree Complete Nutrition Puppy Food

Pedigree is a well-known dog food brand in Australia that you can find in all major supermarkets and food retailers.

Pedigree falls under the umbrella of Mars, Incorporated—an organisation that relies on the WALTHAM Centre for Pet Nutrition for its ‘innovative’ products.

Buy Pedigree Complete Nutrition Puppy Food Online! The WALTHAM Centre for Pet Nutrition is an actual state-of-the-art institute in England where scientists have been researching for over 50 years in the fields of animal nutrition and well-being.

Mars Petcare foods strives to be the best economical choice for pet food consumers. Let’s see if our review of Pedigree Complete Nutrition Puppy Food and Pedigree Puppy Meat Ground Dinner reveal to be economical choices for your pets.

Pedigree Puppy Complete Nutrition dry food comes in a 16.3lb bag whereas the Pedigree Puppy Meat Ground Dinner (chicken & beef and lamb & rice) wet food is sold in cans.

Pedigree Puppy Complete Nutrition dry food is chicken flavoured. Pedigree claim that the addition of DHA (0.05%) nurtures healthy brain development however it is not recognised as an essential nutrient by the AAFCO.

The main ingredients are:

  • ground whole grain corn,
  • poultry by-product meal,
  • brewers rice,
  • corn gluten meal (lutein)
  • animal fat (omega 6 fatty acids)

The main source of protein in Pedigree’s dry food is from a poultry by-product so the nutritional value for a puppy is questionable.

Brewers rice lacks the nutrients and quality found in wholegrain white and brown rice so it is clear that the main ingredients are mostly processed and cheap.

Not only is processed corn potentially difficult for a puppy to digest it also rates very highly on the glycaemic index, which can be bad for a puppy’s blood-sugar levels.

According to the article ‘Diet and risk of type II diabetes: the role of types of fat and carbohydrate’ published in the July 2001 issue of Diabetologia:

…a low-glycaemic index diet with a higher amount of fiber and minimally processed whole grain products reduces glycaemic and insulinaemic responses and lowers the risk of Type II diabetes. Dietary recommendations to prevent Type II diabetes should focus more on the quality of fat and carbohydrate in the diet than quantity alone, in addition to balancing total energy intake with expenditure to avoid overweight and obesity.

Pedigree Puppy Complete Nutrition dry food does not seem to be the most balanced and healthy option for puppies. If your puppy breed is more susceptible to diabetes it might be best to avoid Pedigree-branded puppy food altogether.

Buy Pedigree Complete Nutrition Puppy Dry Food Online!Pedigree Puppy Meat Ground Dinner boasts an advanced antioxidant recipe blend.

The main ingredients include:

  • chicken by-products,
  • meat by-products,
  • chicken,
  • liver,
  • beef,
  • dried egg product,
  • dried tomato pomace
  • vegetable oil

This wet food is intended to supplement the dry food in the later stages of the feeding instructions and that makes sense because this mix has much better protein sources compared to the dry stuff.

The definition of what constitutes ‘dried egg product’ in pet food is debatable however based on the main ingredient list there is an emphasis on protein sources here. Is this mix good for puppies? In moderation with dry food, it might be.

Amazon user Cottony says that Pedigree ‘gives our [dog] gas out this world! It’s almost creepy, she’ll sneak into any room you are in, fart and walk off! Leaving all of us to suffer the repercussions of being a little cheap this month on dog food … I’m will not buy this again’.

Ora Powell has similar sentiments about Pedigree’s dry food: ‘It has too much corn in the ingredients … comes in one way and out the other seconds after [eating]’.

To contrast these experiences Casey Gillette says the dogs ‘… seemed to be more regular while eating the this puppy chow. Also the price is quite a bit lower if you are able to subscribe to it’. Ultimately, Pedigree puppy food is cheap but not necessarily the healthiest or most nutritious option for your pets.

Nature’s Variety Prairie Chicken Meal Brown Rice Medley

Nature’s Variety is a pet food company that manufacture their grain-free and holistic products in America (Lincoln Nebraska) while their headquarters are located in St. Louis, Missouri.

Nature’s Variety is a subsidiary of M.I. Industries, Inc., which provides protein-based pet treats and became incorporated in 1981 where it is located in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Nature's VarietyNature’s Variety claim that their pet foods are 100% free of: corn, wheat, soy, chemical preservatives as well as artificial colors and flavors. Pet food critics are aware that brands that use these artificial fillers can trigger allergic reactions in pets and the content itself is far from nutritious compared to the more natural alternatives.

Our wholesome foods are made with integrity and care. We stand behind our products with a 100% satisfaction guarantee

Nature’s Variety defer to their ‘Nutrition Council’ for insight and advice. These experts specialize in pet nutrition, behavior and medicine and are distinguished doctors in their respective fields.

Nature’s Variety Prairie Chicken Meal Brown Rice Medley supposedly provides all of the key nutrients and beneficial elements a growing doggy needs. So, how does Nature’s Variety pet food fare?

Prairie Kibble for Puppies is available in 5, 15 and 30 pound bags and there are two variations for small and large breeds. This review will focus on Nature’s Variety Prairie Puppy Chicken Meal and Brown Rice Medley.

The main ingredients of Prairie Puppy Chicken Meal and Brown Rice Medley are:

Nature's Variety Prairie Puppy Chicken Meal & Brown Rice Medley• chicken meal,

  • brown rice,
  • barley,
  • oatmeal,
  • chicken fat,
  • ground flaxseed,
  • natural chicken flavour,
  • salmon oil
  • and a list of added vitamins and natural ingredients

Natural Variety keeps their promise when it comes to natural ingredients. Chicken meal is a solid primary meat protein source with more protein than regular chicken and less moisture. This formula is supplemented with a long list of additional vitamins so the loss of natural nutrients that you would normally find in the chicken is compensated.

Surprisingly, there are no other meat protein sources in this product.

Brown rice is by far the best wholegrain option to offer to your pets.

The Journal of Nutrition (June, 2002) published an article that justifies rice over corn in pet foods entitled ‘The Use of Sorghum and Corn as Alternatives to Rice in Dog Foods’:

‘The rice diet caused a higher mean fecal score compared to that of the sorghum and corn diets, indicating that the feces of the dogs in the rice group were looser.’

Barley may not be corn but it is technically a cereal grain, which does rate better than corn on the glycaemic index and packs more fibre making it more digestible.

Oatmeal is not a potent as the fresh stuff and food critics have found that probiotics seem to be more effective for maintaining a healthier colon for puppies.

Chicken fat and salmon oil emphasises the holistic theme of the recipe by bringing the fatty acids from animal sources.

Ground flaxseed is not as great as pure flaxseed given its refined status however there is still merit in its inclusion.

Natural chicken flavour is like animal digest where it comprises a milieu of chicken bits that may barely resemble chicken in the final product. At least we know the animal source is chicken.

So what do the general public think of Natural Variety’s Prairie Puppy Chicken Meal and Brown Rice Medley? As of writing there were only a few reviews of this product.

Amazon user PDXAmazonGirl writes: ‘It has high quality ingredients, no by-products, and lots of vitamins and minerals for my little guy to develop into a healthy adult. The food has made my dog’s coat super lustrous.’ while Double R USA tends to agree: ‘This is a good food for the pups. No fillers’.

Review of Nature’s Recipe Puppy Lamb Meal and Rice

Big Heart Pet Brands is an American pet food producer, distributor and marketer based in San Francisco, California with several brands to their name.

Nature’s Recipe promotes functional and nutritional recipes. Healthy benefits include shiny coat and healthy skin, food that is easy to digest and food that assists with bone density and flexibility.

Nature's RecipeNature’s Recipe Puppy Lamb Meal & Rice contains the following main ingredients:

  • lamb meal,
  • ground rice,
  • barley,
  • poultry fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols),
  • dried egg product,
  • oatmeal,
  • potato protein,
  • natural flavour,
  • tomato pomace,
  • flaxseed

Nature's Recipe - Lamb & Rice Meal Puppy FormulaLamb meal is rendered so it is supposed to contain more meat-protein rather than moisture content. Due to the rendering process, however, we do not know for sure what else has been added during the manufacturing process, which is why a more natural protein source is more reliable and trusted.

The organic acid taurine contained in lamb meal can, supposedly, prolong an ill dog’s life.

According to a study ‘Taurine deficiency in dogs with dilated cardiomyopathy: 12 cases (1997-2001) published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association: twelve dogs were fed a commercial dry diet containing lamb meal and rice as primary ingredients.

Cardiac function and plasma taurine concentration improved with treatment and taurine supplementation. Seven of the 12 dogs that were still alive at the time of the study were receiving no cardiac medications except taurine’.

At number two on the ingredient list is ground rice. Rice that is refined loses its nutrient potency, unfortunately. This is filler.

Barley is a higher quality cereal grain and offers plenty of fibre.

Poultry fat brings the fatty acids that promote the shiny coat and healthy skin.

Dried egg product is contentious. The AAFCO classification of this ingredient says that a minute percentage could contain ash. This is not the freshest way of adding egg to a recipe and there is a lot of uncertainty regarding its actual composition in the Natural Recipe puppy food.

Oatmeal is more filler and potato protein seems to be added to the list to give the impression that there are protein supplements.

Flaxseed is a high quality source for its oil.

Overall, the ingredient list is an odd mix of high quality and low quality ingredients. Other competitive brands offer better and more potent nutritional combinations however the price of the product might be its saving grace.

Some Amazon users have noticed that their dogs did not respond well to Nature’s Recipe Puppy Lamb Meal & Rice.

Keri Armour slowly introduced ‘[four-month-old pittie, Opie,] to this, mixing with his Purina. He ended up getting horrible diarrhea & gas. Thought hs stomach just had to get used to eat, but it got worse…’.

Other puppies have devoured Nature’s Recipe pet foods. Samuel Maximus says: ‘We have tried several puppy food brands. Samuel Maximus absolutely loves this brand. When we brought this product home Sam smelled it and immediately began to eat it. It did not take him long to finish his bowl with no crumbs remaining’.

Review of Natural Balance Original Ultra Small Breed Bites

Actor Dick Van Patten founded his own pet food business in 1989 and named it: Dick Van Patten’s Natural Balance Pet Foods. The pet food manufacturer’s base of operations is located in Pacoima, Los Angeles, California.

Joey Herrick is the current President of Natural Balance and he claims they have hired top veterinarians and nutritionists to develop their respected brand and formulas.

Natural Balance Pet FoodsWhere Joey once helped stock local pet food retailers with their products, the organisation has grown exponentially and they now sell their wares worldwide.

Natural Balance takes quality control very seriously because they understand that a pet’s health is very important.

As part of their quality assurance program, Natural Balance has a laboratory that tests for nine specific contaminants and toxins like salmonella for example. These test results are available online to promote transparency and to hopefully appeal to consumer confidence in the product.

The dry dog food varieties offered by Natural Balance are balanced for all dog life stages. Our review of Natural Balance Original Ultra Small Breed Bites reveals it contains the following main ingredients:

Natural Balance Small Bites Ultra Premium Dog Food• chicken,
• brown rice,
• lamb meal,
• oatmeal,
• barley,
• potatoes,
• carrots,
• duck meal,
• chicken fat (preserved with natural mixed tocopherols),
• tomato pomace,
• natural flavour
• canola oil

This particular Natural Balance recipe features smaller-sized kibbles to accommodate smaller breed dogs and puppies. Also, the texture is purposefully manufactured to help promote healthy teeth and gums for dogs.

The primary protein source in Natural Balance Origin Ultra Small Breed Bites Dry Dog Formula is chicken, which is an excellent primary natural protein source.

Instead of an immediate secondary protein source this recipe jumps straight to an abundance of brown rice, which sounds good for digestion but is not the typical leading ingredient for a natural pet food recipe.

Functional food can be described as food that not only offers nutritional benefits but also helps to prevent disease and promote good health.

According to an article published in The Journal of Nutrition (1998)entitled: ‘Selected Fructooligosaccharide Composition of Pet-Food Ingredients’:

Dietary supplementation of FOS, if proven effective in promoting a more remedial colonic bacterial population and in decreasing fecal odor components, will depend on FOS contribution from pet-food ingredients. … No FOS were detected in … brown rice …

It can be argued that a wholegrain such as brown rice is not the highest grade ingredient for promoting a healthy digestive system however the addition of oatmeal and barley balance the equation.

Potatoes and carrots are good natural fillers while the duck meal and tomato pomace bring the quality of core ingredients down a notch.

Chicken fat and canola oil bring the fatty acids to the mix.

Overall, the ingredients in Natural Balance are actually a decent nutritious and functional balance.

Amazon user Cleo admits ‘The quality is probably as good but just not their favourite’.

There are lots of dogs out there that like CGD’s that ‘…just turn their nose up at …’ the stuff.

Despite the complaints about the taste there are lots of five-star product reviews. LAJayne likes the size of the kibble: ‘My dogs love it but it goes too quickly! The size of the bites is great and easy for my dogs to pick up and chew’ whereas james F. Patton says he: ‘Couldn’t believe all the meat by-products my other dog food had. This made my dog calmer and he has quite a bit of energy’.

Holistic SelectWhat does Holistic Select do to their recipe to achieve their goal? Holistic Select pet food recipes contain a Unique Digestive Health Support System (digestive enzymes and digestive botanicals as well as pre and probiotics) in addition to vegetables, fruits, proteins, whole grains and omega fatty acids.

How unique this mix actually is though compared to other natural and holistic is something we will investigate.

Holistic Select are committed to the highest standards of pet food safety and implement the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points program.

’HACCP is referred as the prevention of hazards rather than finished product inspection. The HACCP system can be used at all stages of a food chain, from food production and preparation processes including packaging, distribution, etc.’

Holistic Select offer a variety of formulas to help all kinds of dogs. This article will focus on our review of Holistic Select’s Grain Free Adult and Puppy Health (salmon and anchovy & sardine meal recipe), which is available in 5, 13 and 26 pound bags.

Our review of Holistic Select’s Grain Free Adult and Puppy Health

The main ingredients for Holistic Select’s Grain Free Adult & Puppy Health (salmon and anchovy & sardine meal recipe) include:

Holistic Select Grain Free Adult and Puppy Health Salmon and Anchovy/Sardine Meal Recipe

  • salmon,
  • anchovy & sardine meal,
  • potatoes,
  • peas,
  • dried ground potatoes,
  • canola oil (preserved with mixed tocopherols),
  • menhaden fish meal,
  • tomato pomace,
  • flaxseed,
  • pea fibre
  • pumpkin

True to Holistic Select’s philosophy, the recipe is grain free and offers a strong selection of essential foods. Salmon is the main protein source, which is supported by anchovy and sardine meal.

Instead of grain filler the recipe uses potatoes and peas and instead of using animal fat canola oil is added to the mix to provide the omega 3 fatty acids.

Crude protein weighs in at 28% and crude fibre is a little higher than most brands at 6%.

It has been scientifically proven that this balance of fish and potato is ideal for treating dogs with upset stomachs. The article ‘Food hypersensitivity in 20 dogs with skin and gastrointestinal signs’, published in Journal of Small Animal Practice (2008), discusses the results of a canine allergy experiment that studied the difference between diets and how they affected the health of twenty dogs that presented signs of colitis.

‘… Both cutaneous and gastrointestinal signs resolved when an elimination diet was fed and could be reproduced when the animal was appropriately challenged. Ten dogs were trailed on a home cooked diet of fish and potato …’

Amazon reviews as of writing this are all positive (five-stars!) for Holistic Select’s Grain Free Adult & Puppy Health dry food. Considering the impressive ingredient list the praise is well deserved. Robert Kurek says: ‘This food works wonders on my dog’s digestive system….totally changed things in 2 days (believe it or not) …’

Beth Daye reports: ‘Holistic Select is a wonderful kibble food. I have fed it to my 8.5 year old cairn terrier for 3+ years and she is in terrific condition. I won’t feed anything else’.

Review of Hill’s Science Diet Puppy Health Development

Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Inc. is a pet food company with a legacy that dates back to 1939. Doctor Mark L. Morris devised specific nutrition formulas for pets because he theorised that by managing their diet you can manage their health.

Leading by example, Doctor Morris helped a guide dog with kidney issues by formulating a prescription pet food which is known today as Hill’s Prescription Diet.

<img class="alignright size-full wp-image-807" title="Hill's Pet Nutrition, Inc." src="http://bestpuppyfoodbrands.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/hills-logo.jpg" alt="Hill's Pet Nutrition, Inc." width="225" height="225" srcset="http://bestpuppyfoodbrands.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/hills-logo.jpg 225w, http://bestpuppyfoodbrands.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/hills-logo-150×150 find out.jpg 150w” sizes=”(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px” />Ultimately, Hill’s Pet Nutrition strive to enrich and extend the pet-people bond via healthy food.

Like most ‘innovative’ and ‘forward-thinking’ pet food companies, The Hill’s Pet Nutrition Centre in Topeka, Kansas is a state-of-the-art facility that Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Inc. use to further their nutrition research and veterinarian science.

Hills’s Pet Nutrition pet care products are sold worldwide.

Hill’s Science Diet Puppy Health Development OriginalHill’s Science Diet Puppy Health Development Original dry food is the standard variety. There are also small and large breed puppy food variations available. The bags come in 4.5, 15.5 and 30 pound bags.

Our Review of Hill’s Science Diet Puppy Health Development Original dry food reveals the main ingredients include:

  • whole grain corn,
  • chicken by-product meal,
  • soybean meal,
  • animal fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid),
  • dried beet pulp,
  • chicken liver flavour,
  • brewers rice,
  • lactic acid,
  • fish oil
  • flaxseed

The lack of a major meat protein source is disconcerting here. The primary core ingredient is whole grain corn which not only rates very highly on the glycaemic index—which can lead to high blood-sugar levels (diabetes)—but it also poses potential allergen issues for breeds that may be susceptible to gluten-related digestive problems.

Chicken by-product meal is not a glorious substitute for chicken either. We have an ambiguous mass of junk that has then gone through an additional stage of processing to render the bits of all moisture. This does not sound very nutritious.

Soybean meal supplements the protein ratio of the recipe.

Journal of Animal Science (vol. 74, 1996) published an article entitled ‘Digestion responses to low oligosaccharide soybean meal by ileally-cannulated dogs’. The experiment results were interesting:

‘We investigated digestion responses to conventional and low oligosaccharide soybean meal (SBM) incorporation into diets for dogs … Total tract digestibility of CP [crude protein] was higher (P < .006) in dogs fed the SBM diets’.

At a glance you may think that soybean meal would assist digestion. Sadly, the soybean meal process leaves the flour-like remnants of the soy beans after the oil has been ground out. The soybean meal is just protein filler.

Animal fat is always welcome when it comes to essential oils however the ingredient list is vague. It is not clear how beneficial ‘animal fat’ is because we do not know which animal the fat comes from.

Dried beet pulp is more filler with only a tenth of its content comprising useful protein.

Brewers rice is the bottom of the barrel when it comes to rice quality because it is just the husks of the grain.

It is good to see fish oil and flax seed on the ingredients list as they make up for the oils missing elsewhere.

Amazon user TexasShopper had trouble feeding Hill’s Science Diet Puppy Health Development Original dry food: ‘Our dog does not like it at all. Had to buy some sprinkles (beef liver) here at Amazon to make our 8-month old, 18 lbs Terrier mix to like it. And even then it takes her a long time to finish a cup of it on a twice a day feeding. She does get a few treats in between so that could be messing it up’.

Dogs without allergies seem to love the stuff as Carlton Davis explains: ‘My puppy eats it, and after several months has not come down with rickets, scurvy, or any other nutritional issues. Seems like a good sign to me’.

Review of Fromm Puppy Gold Dry Food

Fromm is an American family-owned pet food company based in Wisconsin that has been in business since 1904. The Fromm Family introduced the first canine distemper (viral disease) vaccine during the 1930s and claims to have introduced the idea of premium pet food to the general public. Fromm offer a dry food bag called Puppy Gold.

Fromm FamilyFromm Puppy Gold dry puppy food is available as either a 5lb or 33lbs/14kg bag.

Our review of Fromm Puppy Gold Dry Food reveals the ingredient list is promising. The main ingredients include:

Fromm Puppy Gold Dry Puppy Food

  • duck,
  • chicken meal,
  • chicken,
  • oatmeal,
  • pearled barley,
  • brown rice, and
  • flaxseed

Fromm Puppy Gold has an excellent natural selection that promotes a healthy coat and fortifies the immune system. First of all, duck looks like it could be the main and most important ingredient here as it is supposedly a strong source of protein and something a little fancier to see on the label—the packaging is gold after all, implying that the product is premium.

Unfortunately, processed duck meat mostly comprises water and moisture instead of concentrated protein. Always question the authenticity of core protein sources.

At number two—however—we see chicken meal, which may come across as a little disappointing and might be overlooked if you were chuffed with seeing the duck. Chicken meal is quickly followed up by chicken but we do not necessarily know how much actual white meat is in the mix.

Oatmeal balances this recipe and is more than just filler. As a supplement ingredient in Fromm Puppy Gold oatmeal may not contain that rich hit of protein but it does pack the fibre puppies need to maintain their digestive system. Also, oatmeal is the lesser evil when it comes to carbohydrates in grain.

Pearled barley is arguably fancy filler too although according to ‘Barley for food: Characteristics, improvement, and renewed interest’ published in the Journal of Cereal Science (September 2008):

‘Renewed interest in barley for food uses largely centres around the effects of β-glucans on lowering blood cholesterol levels and glycemic index. Wholegrain barley foods also appear to be associated with increased satiety and weight loss.’

Flaxseed contains oil that is perfect for shiny coats and healthy skin. Brown rice is not as refined as white rice so it fits the easily digestible and wholegrain ratio of this recipe quite well.

Overall, the combination of ingredients in Fromm Puppy Gold is a sweet mix of strong protein sources and holistic choices.

The product reviews on Amazon are overwhelmingly positive, which is a testament to the strong ingredients.

Amazon user gem26 says this is ‘… by far the best puppy food …’, which has corrected digestive and stomach issues for their puppy.

Jennifer confirms that Fromm Puppy Gold energises her dog for training and Christopher Partain says that ‘some people would be put off by the price of this dog food but I have to recommend it to anyone who wants a healthy and happy dog’.

There are very few negative Amazon reviews of Fromm Puppy Gold. Boobut commented on the poor condition of the contents due to shipping (the dry dog kibble was one solid mass from being improperly shipped or stored) while other Amazon users share Redrose’s sentiments where their puppies just did not have the taste for this range of dry dog food.

DigestiBits contain pumpkin, eggs, prebiotics, probiotics, fruits and vegetables that are packed with fibre and antioxidants that are meant to keep a canine’s digestive system, for lack of a better phrase, running smoothly.

Our review of Dogswell LiveFree Chicken Recipe for puppies reveals the following main ingredients:

Dogswell LiveFree Chicken Recipe for Puppies

  • chicken,
  • turkey meal,
  • peas,
  • chicken meal,
  • chickpeas,
  • chicken fat,
  • pea protein,
  • pea starch,
  • natural flavour,
  • dried eggs,
  • salmon meal
  • salmon oil

There is a good variety of core protein sources with both the natural chicken and the rendered turkey and chicken meal that will pack a nice punch of protein to the mix. Crude protein is satisfyingly high at 40%.

No added hormones, processed gluten or artificial flavours, colours and preservatives. Dogswell dog food recipes are also devoid of wheat, corn, soy and flour, which is advantageous because consumers are cautious of foods that may trigger allergies or immune system problems such as coeliac disease.

Dogswell DigestiBits™It is interesting to see the dominance of peas in the ingredient lineup, which is not surprising given it fits the low glycaemic index theme and it also provides vitamin C and is obviously low in saturated fat and cholesterol.

Chickpeas, however, are slightly higher on the glycaemic index compared to peas and brings more fibre to the mix.

Natural flavour comes across as a little vague so I question what it actually constitutes.

Dried eggs are a neat natural source of protein and a great method of including vitamins without relying on additives.

The salmon elements bring the obligatory oils necessary for promoting good skin care and a glossy coat.

Although everything looks promising on paper (we really like what we’re seeing), it is difficult to accurately review this product because as of writing this there are no Amazon reviews of the product that offer any insight or experience with Dogswell LiveFree Chicken Recipe for puppies.

Review of Canidae All Life Stages Formula

Canidae Natural Pet Food Company is a natural pet food manufacturer based in Brownwood, Texas—America. The pet food is made at their Ethos Pet Nutrition Research & Development Centre as well as a plant in Lathrop, California. The pet food is sold both domestically and internationally.

HealthPlus Solutions is Canidae’s unique selling point for their line of dry dog food. The kibble undergoes an additional process post cooking where probiotics, antioxidants and omega 6 & 3 are applied for the usual immune system and coat benefits a consumer would expect to see on the label.

Canidae Natural Pet Food CompanyThe ingredients are what you would expect from a natural holistic food producer too: no corn, wheat, soy, grain fraction or by-products.

As the name of the dry dog food suggests, Canidae All Life Stages Formula is suitable for canines of all ages. The product is available in 5, 15, 30 and 44 pound bags.

Our Review of Canidae All Life Stages Formula reveals a very good natural dry dog food option containing high concentrated protein sources with the following main ingredients:

Canidae All Life Stages

  • chicken meal,
  • turkey meal,
  • lamb meal,
  • brown rice,
  • white rice,
  • rice bran,
  • peas,
  • potatoes,
  • oatmeal,
  • cracked pearled barley
  • chicken fat

The first three main ingredients are concentrated meat protein sources. Chicken, turkey and lamb meal are rendered dry and pack a bigger dose of protein at the expense of moisture and some nutrients that enrich the original source.

Cabidae All Life Stages IngredientsIt is interesting to note that that there are no traditionally natural meat sources. Other brands would feature a natural meat source like beef or chicken as their number one ingredient.

Brown rice and white rice as a full grain rather than being ground or processed is an excellent source of carbohydrates and good for the digestive system.

Canidae All Life Stages Guaranteed AnalysisWhere other brands would opt for a series of different grains and by-products for filler, Canidae’s All Life Stages Formula uses a natural selection of peas and potatoes that offer more carbohydrates which means more energy for dogs to burn off. Cracked pearled barley is also important for good health in general.

You do not see rice bran very often on the label of main ingredients for dry dog food which is a shame. Rice bran rates very low on the glycaemic index which is good and means that it is also low in sodium and cholesterol. When this fibre source is supplemented properly it also provides a little protein.

According to a peer-reviewed article entitled ‘Evaluation of stabilized rice bran as an ingredient in dry extruded dog diets’ (Journal of Animal Science , vol. 82, 2004):

‘Stabilized rice bran is a highly palatable ingredient when included in a dry dog diet, and did not elicit an effect on inflammatory immune mediators in healthy dogs.’

Canidae HealthPlus SolutionsIt is important to remember that there are no super ingredients in dog food. For all intents and purposes exotic ingredients like rice bran is nothing more than a tasty natural addition to the recipe that provides some holistic benefits.

Amazon reviews are mostly positive. Amazon user kmayers had trouble finding the right food as their dog was refusing to eat however now: ‘Let’s just say, she has more energy than all of her doggie friends’.

Ude257 had a lethargic Pug/Beagle for three years and a puppy Labrador and now after the transition and regularly eating Canidae All Life Stages Formula: ‘[the Pug/Beagle has a] crazy shiny coat now, and has ALL KINDS of energy to keep up with the puppy now!’.

There are only 9 one-star Amazon reviews at the time of this review reporting ill dogs as a result of eating the Canidae All Life Stages Formula. Jennifer Rashleigh’s observations are worth noting: ‘I’ve been feeding this to my dog exclusively for several years.

Canidae Daily Feeding GuidelinesIn the past 6-8 months he’s been having lots of problems with vomiting and diarrhea. At times he just wouldn’t eat. I finally found other reviews online from hundreds of people describing the same problems with this food. It never occurred to me it could be his food! I switched to a different brand and the problems have stopped’.

The ingredient list looks too good to be true and should technically be a good pet food choice however as always some dogs will not be able to handle the nutrient-protein overload.

Review of Blue Buffalo’s Blue Life Protection Formula

The Blue Buffalo Company is an American pet food business based in Wilton, Connecticut and was founded on the principle of caring for family pets in the best possible way by providing healthier edible options.

Bill and his two sons developed pet food that would help their poor Blue overcome health issues. Blue Buffalo’s philosophy is one of ensuring pets live happy and healthy lives. Blue Buffalo Company was officially founded in 2002.

Buy Blue Buffalo Life Protection Online! So what makes Blue Buffalo pet food stand out from the other products on the supermarket shelf? Well, Blue Buffalo have stated that their pet food does not contain chicken or poultry by-product meals, artificial preservatives, flavours and colours.

This statement, specifically concerning zero poultry by-products, has stirred controversy in the media recently where Purina accused Blue Buffalo of false advertising. Blue Buffalo in turn have accused their rival of defamation.

Back to the food. Blue Buffalo do not implement corn, wheat and soy in their pet food recipes because they are also aware of potential allergy issues like coeliac disease that can cause serious health problems for dogs.

Aside from using real chicken, lamb or fish in their recipes—as they understand the nutritional value of a strong protein source—Blue Buffalo pet food contains LifeSource Bits, which is a fancy blend of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants intended to fortify a pet’s immune system.

These cold-formed LifeSource Bits in the kibble should retain more of the vitamins and nutrients than say other processed foods that may lose their potency due to the manufacturing process of extreme cooking temperatures.

Blue Life Protection Formula (dry puppy food) comes in four different recipes: chicken & brown rice, Lamb & oatmeal, (large breed puppy) chicken & brown rice and (small breed puppy) chicken & oatmeal. Our review of Blue Buffalo’s Blue Life Protection Formula will focus on the chicken & brown rice mix which contains the following main ingredients:

Blue Buffalo Life Protection Chicken and Rice Small Breed Puppy Formula

  • de-boned chicken,
  • chicken meal,
  • whole ground brown rice,
  • oatmeal,
  • whole ground barley,
  • menhaden fish meal,
  • chicken fat,
  • flax seed
  • and a long list of fruits and vegetables

As de-boned chicken implies, it is the meat minus the bones but still retains the moisture. Chicken meal, however, is the meat with the water content removed and is arguably more concentrated with protein. True to Blue Buffalo’s pet nutrition philosophy there are natural meat protein sources at the top of the ingredient list.

Blue Buffalo Life Protection Chicken and Rice Large Breed Puppy FormulaEven though chicken meal is rendered chicken the food manufacturer tread a fine line when they make claims that their food does not contain poultry by-products and so on.

The fillers in this recipe are all natural and of high quality with the exception of the brown rice, which we will explain. Notice how the brown rice is listed as ‘whole ground’; at a glance you could mistake that for ‘whole grain’.

Scientific America uploaded an article entitled ‘Whole-grain Foods not always Healthful’ that explains that:

‘ … some processing techniques have been shown to degrade natural antioxidants and reduce fiber content …’

Blue Buffalo Life Protection Lamb and Oatmeal Puppy FormulaWe can safely speculate that the only drawback to using a more refined brown rice substance rather than the whole grain is that it loses a fraction of its nutritional benefit.

To cover the losses from the refined brown rice, though, we have oatmeal, and to a lesser extent whole ground barley, which is generally higher in protein and fibre—excellent for the digestive system—and lower on the carbohydrate calories. Sure, the recipe does not have corn but it does have some grain. Oatmeal is the recommended form of grain to appear on a pet food recipe.

Menhaden fish meal is a great ingredient to see in the mix because it is not only another protein source but it is also nutrient-rich.

Chicken fat and flax seed satisfy the balance where essential oils are required for the healthy skin and shiny coat. Instead of seeing a list of nasty grains and other by-products to pad out the remainder of the recipe Blue Buffalo rely on natural ingredients, which is fantastic.

Amazon product reviews typically reflect negative stories about dogs with frequent and smelly bowel movements when they sample pet food with an abundance of natural ingredients. Adam says his ‘… Siberian Husky did not agree with this food at all’ while AB would agree: ‘The only thing that would warrant a second purchase would be a free gas mask in the bag’.

Blue Buffalo Dry Food for Puppies Despite the negative feedback there are a lot of happy customers out there. Lorraine says she: ‘… got a small bag of Blue Buffalo at the store to try her on it, and she loves it. Plus, no more sick puppy’.

Jeannette Mortimer shares her opinion: ‘My Great Dane has issues keeping weight on and her stomach gets upset very easily. This has been a life saver for her. We tried three higher end foods with her. This is the only one that she loves to eat and actually gains/maintains weight with’.

Review of Wellness Complete Health Puppy Food

As the brand Wellness implies, this American pet food manufacturer is all about natural food choices for pets. The business has a proud history where a hard tack sea biscuit baked at A. Hubbard and Sons Bakery in Massachusetts prior to 1926 was offered to a dog and the dog loved it. The bakery then geared up for dog food distribution and things changed in 1961 when Jim Scott Senior purchased the company and committed to developing highly nutritious gourmet dog snacks. Formulas were adjusted to a pure natural recipe and by the 1990s Wellness was born. Let’s jump right into our review of Wellness Complete Health Puppy Food.

Shop for Wellness® Complete Health Puppy Food online!Wellness Complete Healthy dry dog food is available in 6lb, 15lb, and 30lb bags.

The Wellness Complete Healthy dry puppy food recipe contains deboned chicken, chicken meal, ground barley, salmon meal, ground brown rice and chicken fat. Instead of any grain by-product or artificial filler there are also tomatoes, carrots and ground flaxseed in the mix. The ingredients mostly comprise a natural range, which is exactly what is being advertised.

An article entitled ‘Extraction of proteins from slaughterhouse by-products: Influence of operating conditions on functional properties’ published in Meat Science (August 2008) highlights the protein advantage of using mechanically deboned chicken meat (MDCM) when compared to other by-products:

‘The functional properties of the protein concentrates were compared to those of some commercial ingredients. Proteins from pork lungs and MDCM exhibited better gelling properties than egg white and beef plasma, while beef and pork lungs displayed very good emulsifying properties, similar to Na-caseinates. As the methods developed are easy to scale-up, the use of by-product proteins at industrial scale appears to be an interesting opportunity to obtain added value slaughterhouse by-products.’

Shop for Wellness® Complete Health Large Breed Puppy Food Online!Amazon user Neil adopted a Border Collie with diahorrea issues and as soon as he opened the Wellness dry food ‘… she started chewing on the cut away of the bag; it was obvious she loved the taste’.

Neil gives a rating of 4/5, presumably due to the price of the product that is nearly double compared to competitive brands. After feeding the Border Collie Wellness for quite some time ‘… She would refuse to drink water until I offered her my bottled water; she is now on purified water and wellness dog food and her stool has firmed up, not a single day of irregularity since. Oh, and the resealable seal still seals; down to the last kibble’.

Other Amazon users, however, have had less pleasant things to say and there are a lot of reviews like Krystal’s where ‘I liked that the ingredients list was full of healthy things and had no corn or fillers. My puppy liked the taste. However, I’m rating this a 2 because while on Wellness, he had the runs. His poop was always super wet and mushy and sometimes it would be all liquid…’.

Some breeds maybe more sensitive or lacking something else in their routine that would prevent loose and smelly stool.

Review of Beneful Puppy Food Wet and Dry

Nestlé Purina PetCare Company is a corporation with its headquarters based in Missouri, America. This economic superpower acquired Ralston Purina’s animal feed business in 2001, which then merged, by proxy, with Nestlé’s Friskies Petcare. They sell their products worldwide.

There was a recall back in 2007 and there is a current lawsuit between Purina and rival competitor Blue Buffalo where Purina has accused Blue Buffalo of false advertising and Blue Buffalo have accused Purina of defamation. Let’s step aside from the drama and focus on the food.

Beneful

Nestlé Purina PetCare Company has a dog food product line called Beneful with both dry and wet varieties. Beneful Healthy Growth for Puppies dry food comes in 3.5lbs, 7lbs, 15.5lbs and 31.1lbs bags.

There is an excellent range of over a dozen wet foods available with exotic flavours such as savoury rice & lamb stew and Mediterranean style medley that come in 10oz tubs.

Purina ensures the quality of its products by tracking ingredients from the plants to the packaged product and by working with suppliers that comply with their strict manufacturing standards.

Our review of Beneful Puppy Food Wet and Dry reveals a long list of by-products and fillers, with the first real meat being at #6:

<img class="alignright size-full wp-image-732" title="Beneful Healthy Growth for Puppies" src="http://bestpuppyfoodbrands sertraline 50 mg.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/healthy-growth-puppies.jpg” alt=”Beneful Healthy Growth for Puppies” width=”233″ height=”500″ />

  • Ground yellow corn,
  • chicken by-product meal,
  • corn gluten meal,
  • whole wheat flour,
  • animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of vitamin E),
  • chicken,
  • rice flour
  • soy flour

The mention of corn as a primary ingredient is not a good sign. Neither is gluten, flour or any kind of by-product in general. Soy as a plant derivative of protein is not a justifiable substitute for a meat protein source either.

The first hint of real meat is at number six on the list, which is very poor when you compare Beneful products to other dry foods at the supermarket that would normally place chicken or beef at the top.

A peer reviewed article published in Agricultural and Food Science (vol. 13, 2004) entitled ‘Composition, digestibility and nutritive value of cereals for dogs’ confirms that corn is bad for a puppy’s diet:

… The quantity of excreted wet faeces increased and the percentage of dry matter (DM) in faeces decreased when oat groats, barley, wheat or corn were supplemented to the basal diet, in contrast to rice …

Why risk introducing corn to your puppy’s diet when there is a chance that it may trigger coeliac disease? For those unaware, coeliac disease is typically an abnormal reaction to gluten that affects the immune system and can damage the bowels. A healthy and balanced diet is important for protecting our pets.

If the alarm bells are not ringing already, you may want to think twice before purchasing Beneful dry puppy food for your pet.

Beneful Prepared MealsBeef & Chicken Medley with Green Beans, Carrots & Wild Rice contains the following main ingredients:

Beneful Prepared Meals Beef & Chicken Medley

  • Water sufficient for processing,
  • beef,
  • wheat gluten,
  • liver,
  • white rice,
  • green beans,
  • chicken,
  • meat by-products,
  • corn starch-modified,
  • carrots, and
  • wild rice

The packaging for Beneful wet foods sure look appealing, especially with all of those vegetables and meats and rice— so much colour, must be perfect, right? The meal as a whole looks fresh and appetizing, but is it worthy of your puppy’s palate?

So the tub comprises lots of moisture (78%!). Water is great, but where is the value for money? Crude protein weighs in at only 10% so that is where the beef, chicken and the meat by-products come in. There should be a higher concentration of meat/protein for this wet food option to be worthwhile though.

As a standalone meal the Beneful wet food is not very nutritious compared to other wet foods on the market and if you were to feed this stuff to your pet you may want to mix it with dry food or supplement it with raw meat.

There are lots of positive stories where puppies have enjoyed the Beneful selection of wet and dry foods via Amazon. John I. Oines says he has ‘… used this variety of ‘Beneful’ mixed with dry dog food to make it more appetizing. It works for us’.

Fox posted a five-star review: ‘My dog just loves this food and the containers are easy to use. They can also be recycled which is good for the environment’.

Amazon user J. Mullally, however, says the Beneful wet food ‘… is the equivalent of fast food for dogs—literally. Pop the top and there you go. But the ingredients and nutrition are sadly lacking and it contains TWO sources of sweetener.’

OWG is not a fan of Beneful wet food either: ‘A trip to the vet today for skin, urinary and digestive issues have identified the culprit. No more’.

Review of AvoDerm Premium Puppy Food

First opened in 1947 by Harold Taylor, Breeder’s Choice Pet Food Company is an American food manufacturer that produces a line of natural puppy food under the AvoDerm brand. As the name suggests, AvoDerm uses avocados as a key ingredient to produce puppy food that promotes skin and coat care as well as a diet rich with nutrients for a healthy immune system. The company website pinpoints their success with avocados at around 1982 when a local grower in California had plenty of avocados to sell and asked if Breeder’s Choice could use the delicious fruit in their pet food recipes.AvoDerm Natural Chicken Meal and Brown Rice Formula Puppy Food Breeder’s Choice have since maintained research and have developed innovations in their natural pet food niche to offer what some consumers consider AvoDerm to be a ‘miracle’ product.

AvoDerm Natural Chicken Meal and Brown Rice Formula comes in both canned and bag form. The bags are 15lbs/6.8kg whereas the cans are 13oz/368.5g.

Our review of AvoDerm Premium Puppy Food reveals a healthy list of essential ingredients as well as Avocado in all variants for healthy skin and coat.:

  • chicken meal,
  • ground whole brown rice,
  • AvoDerm® premium dog and cat food formulas are loaded with high quality meat proteins, wholesome grains, antioxidant nutrients plus vitamins and minerals for inside health and California avocados for healthy skin and coat on the outside.

  • ground whole white rice,
  • oatmeal,
  • chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols),
  • rice bran,
  • avocado,
  • tomato pomace (source of lycopene),
  • flax seed (source of omega-3 fatty acid)
  • …and a long list of vitamins and other by-products.

As the name suggests, AvoDerm uses avocados as a key ingredient to produce puppy food…

Due to the rendering process of producing chicken meal it is found to have less moisture and a higher concentration of protein compared to raw chicken, which is ideal for pet consumption. Rice is good helping upset stomachs. Oatmeal lowers blood cholesterol and is a reliable fibre source. Tomato pomace is the leftovers of tomato manufacturing so it mostly contains water and tomato skin.

Buy AvoDerm Natural Chicken Meal and Brown Rice Formula Puppy Food, 13-Ounce Cans, Case of 12!Canned ingredients include chicken, chicken broth, chicken liver, salmon, rice, Tuna, peas, carrots, potatoes, flax seed, avocado meal, avocado oil and a list of acids and vitamins. Persin is a toxin that is bad for pets and is found in avocados. AvoDerm’s manufacturing process confirms that persin is not found in the food they produce.

Dr. Art Craigmill, UC Davis, Professor and Extension Specialist in Environmental Toxicology has said that his studies and other research in the United States and Australia have shown that the problem of toxicity is in the leaves and the pit of the Guatemalan variety; the avocado meat of the fruit and oils have not been shown to be toxic. AvoDerm pet products do not utilize any Guatemalan variety avocados, nor do we use any leaves or pits of any variety of avocados for our avocado meal and oil.

AvoDerm Natural Chicken Meal and Brown Rice Formula Small Breed Puppy FoodAs AvoDerm is rich in proteins, vitamins and has an abundance of avocado in the mix, Breeder’s Choice recommend a five-day transition before replacing a puppy’s diet exclusively with their product.

For the first two days: feed 20% AvoDerm and 80% of the old brand; for the next two days: feed 50% AvoDerm and 50% of your pet’s old brand; on day five: feed 80% AvoDerm and 20% of the old brand; and on day six you can then feed 100% AvoDerm.

Wet Dog Food or Dry Dog Food: Which is Better?

Deciding between whether you want to use wet or dry dog food to feed your puppy? Wondering which is the better choice? Which is more healthy? Which are recommended by the experts for optimal nutrition?

Truth be told, none is better than the other. Both have their pros and cons and deciding which you want to use is simply a matter of weighing up the pros and cons of each against one another and choose the one that suits your liking the best.

Wet or Dry Dog FoodLet’s look at the pros and cons of each, and then down below I’ll even put them head on next to each other in a nice and neat comparison table for you, deal? Let’s do this…

Wet Puppy Food: Pros & Cons

Wet Puppy FoodThe term already suggests it; wet puppy food contains a lot more fluid as opposed to dry dog food. Active puppies need a lot more fat and fluids and wet puppy food is the ideal type of food to supplement this requirement. Certain health considerations make wet puppy food the better choice, such as older dogs with damaged teeth or digestive issues, wholesale jerseys dogs with smaller mouths or even poorly aligned jaws. Some dogs may have lost their olfactory senses and may be inclined to Testinl?gg prefer foods with a richer scent and flavor.

Wet dog foods have several drawbacks. Puppies eating wet food usually leaves the place messy, the bowls dirty which gives its caretaker a little extra work to keep things afloat. Probably the biggest drawback of wet dog food is that as soon as the can is opened, it immediately loses it shelf life. The food then cheap nfl jerseys needs to be refrigerated and used within two or three days from opening. Wet dog food should also not be left open or exposed as Happy it is easily contaminated with bacteria. Puppies living off wet dog food are also in need of more regular dental care as opposed to puppies eating dry dog food. The final drawback of wet puppy food is that it is definitely not as economical as dry dog food. As a result, smaller amounts will probably be bought at a time where as dry dog food can be bought in bulk.

Dry Puppy Food: Pros & Cons

Dry Puppy FoodKibble, or more commonly known as dry dog food, is by far the most convenient type of dog food to keep around. It has a long shelf life, can be bought in bulk, can easily be cleaned or wiped up if spilled all over the place and well, it doesn’t need to be refrigerated and can be stored in an outside room or the garage. The fact that dry dog food has an extremely long shelf life, makes it quite convenient for dog owners to fill up a larger bowl and leave it there for their dog to feed out of for longer periods of time. Dry dog food doesn’t wholesale nba jerseys spoil so contamination isn’t even a factor. Dry kebble can be used as a training treat and some dry dog food brands are specially formulated to clean the teeth when chewed. Dry dog food is much more economical than wet dog food, and can be bought in bulk.

Of course, dry dog food doesn’t provide as much moisture and hydration to active puppies as wet food does. This lack of moisture also means a lot more carbohydrates than wet dog food, which is not always a good thing. Dry dog food may also not be the best option for puppies and dogs with health issues, poorly aligned jaws or damaged teeth.

Wet or Dry Dog Food: The Verdicts?

Earlier I mentioned that none is better than the other; both has its pros and cons and it’s simply a matter of deciding which suits your puppy’s health, your circumstances and of course your pocket the best.
